Flag of My Fathers

Red is the red rum
and blood of Trini creole…
the Scarlet Ibis

Black is the black gold
and dark days of bond and slave…
the pitch in the lake

White is the white bones
of Empire and Republic…
flag of my fathers

Ibis

wetland water whirls
an ibis searches for crabs ~
foraging ballet

white feathers emerge
standing tall on bright pink stilts ~
bill crab prize displayed

grunts and cooing sounds
echo the wet marsh at dusk ~
ibis courting chant
